Best HireVue practice tools: 7 ways to rehearse a timed one-way video interview

What is a HireVue interview, according to HireVue?

A HireVue interview is usually a one-way video interview: you record answers to questions on screen, alone, whenever suits you, and the employer reviews them later. HireVue's candidate FAQ calls it the OnDemand Interview, "the kind you do without another person at the other end that lets you choose when and where to do the interview". HireVue is the platform; the employer licenses it and sets the questions.

What HireVue's own pages say about the format:

• Questions: each one appears written or as a video, and you get "several minutes to respond", according to HireVue's assessment guide.
• Length: most video assessments include 5 to 8 questions and take under 20 to 30 minutes; HireVue advises setting aside 45 minutes.
• Timing: HireVue's older 2014 guide described 30 seconds to review the question and prepare, then up to 3 minutes to answer. It predates today's interface, so treat that as a common setup, not a rule.
• Retakes: the number of attempts per real question is set by the recruiter for that position, so it varies by employer.
• No previews: every candidate gets the same time to review, prepare and respond, and you cannot see the real questions in advance or play back your real answers.
• Devices: a computer browser, or the HireVue app on a phone or tablet.
• Games: some employers add game-based assessments, short games of about 3 minutes each, with whole assessments lasting from 7 to 20 minutes.

HireVue's FAQ says its assessments look at job knowledge and competencies such as communication and problem solving. Its candidate pages do not say how a specific employer scores a recording or how much of that review is automated.

Which HireVue practice tool fits where you are in the hiring process?

Choose by whether the invitation has arrived and what worries you most.

• The invitation is already in your inbox: open HireVue's practice questions first to check the interface and your setup, then practice answers elsewhere.
• You want the one-way format with AI feedback before you are invited: Huru records video answers one question at a time under a time cap (2 minutes on the questions we saw).
• You are a student or with a workforce agency: ask whether they license Big Interview, whose recorded simulator and lessons suit a first HireVue. Your career center may also offer its own recorded practice or a staff member who will watch a take with you.
• You ramble, fill pauses or start slowly: Yoodli's delivery analytics target exactly that, free for 5 roleplays.
• Your worry is what to say: Mock Interview Pro scores and rewrites every answer ($39 once, voice only). Its live video interviews, with presence feedback by its own account, need the $59 1-Year Pass, and they are conversational, not one-way.
• You have no budget and want likely questions against a clock: Interviews by AI gives 3 questions a month with a 2 or 3 minute answer limit, then ChatGPT for more spoken drafts.

How should you practice for a one-way video interview?

Practice the two things a recording exposes: an answer that holds together without anyone prompting you, and how you come across saying it to a camera. A HireVue interview gives you no interviewer to nod, rephrase or rescue a slow start, so the skill is starting cleanly and finishing inside the time.

1. Find your likely questions. The employer writes them, so start from the job posting and the competencies it names. Our interview question pages list common questions by role, with free typed feedback.
2. Say every answer out loud against a timer. Aim to finish within the few minutes HireVue gives, with a short structure you can recall in a 30 second prep window.
3. Record yourself and watch it back. HireVue's own interview tips suggest recording yourself on a phone, tablet or computer before the interview. Look for filler words, a long wind-up and where your eyes go.
4. Get feedback on the content. Playback shows delivery; it will not tell you that your answer never names a result.
5. Once invited, rehearse in HireVue itself. Its practice questions check your camera, microphone and lighting in the real interface.

How did we judge each tool against HireVue's real format?

We judged each tool against HireVue's own description of an OnDemand interview, using four tests: does it record video of your answers, is it one-way (no conversational interviewer), does it time the prep and the answer, and does it give feedback afterward. Few tools pass all four, so each pick's summary says which ones it passes and which it does not.

Where we could get in, we ran the same script we use across the site: a Senior Product Manager candidate, the same job posting and the same two deliberately average answers, in an automated desktop browser with a simulated microphone and a camera test pattern, without paying, on September 18, 2026. How we test has the details. Huru, Yoodli, Interviews by AI and Mock Interview Pro's typed practice let us answer questions. Big Interview had nothing to try without paying. HireVue's practice needs a real employer invitation and ChatGPT was not tested, so those are described from their makers' pages. Because our camera showed a test pattern, we report nothing about facial or eye contact feedback from any tool.

What we left out:

• Live interview copilots. Final Round AI's paid plan names HireVue among the interview types its copilot supports, and LockedIn AI advertises HireVue support. Those help during a real interview rather than before it; see AI interview copilots.
• Gemini Live, free and good for spoken warmups, but it is conversational and records nothing for you to review. It is on our free interview practice list.

Tools we have not covered yet include hirevuepractice.com, Extern's HireVue mock, VMock and InterviewStream.

What can't any practice tool do for a HireVue interview?

No tool can show you the employer's real questions. Each company writes its own set, and HireVue deliberately keeps them hidden until you record. A tool that promises the exact questions is guessing, so practice the kinds of question the posting implies.

Practice also cannot tell you how a specific employer reviews recordings, how many attempts you will get, or whether a game-based assessment follows. Those are the employer's settings. Video practice does not prepare you for the games, which are a separate format from answering questions. HireVue's assessment guide says "there is no way to study" for its video-based assessment and offers preparation tips instead, which is a fair reminder that practice builds comfort and structure, not a score guarantee. AI feedback can also be generous: in our test, Mock Interview Pro's typed practice scored deliberately vague answers 65 and 60. Watch each take once, fix the one habit that bothers you most, and record again.
